Take Action

You can help libraries get the funding they need to provide the kinds of services that communities deserve.

Funding is a significant concern for libraries across the country. Federal and state funding for public libraries has flattened or declined, and the ability to raise funds from local sources, which represent 81% of all library funding, has also become more difficult.   Library levies and referenda are being placed on election ballots less frequently in recent years and passage rates of the library levies that make it to the ballot have steadily declined over the past decade. We also see local politicians declining to increase funding from the general funds for libraries.

Without some action, this funding problem will not self-correct and is likely to worsen. Public library budgets face significant economic strains with increased energy and healthcare costs and declining property values, leading to a reduction in local property taxes, the source of most local library funding.

This is where you come in. You can help libraries get the funding they need to provide the kinds of services that communities deserve by engaging in the political process through this political action platform.

EveryLibrary's Political Action Platform is the first platform dedicated to voter and local political action just for libraries, librarians, and the issues that are important to the work that they do. From this site you can sign petitions about local issues, volunteer for the causes that matter to you, and attend events and fundraisers for libraries in your area. If you would like to get involved and create your own library petitions, surveys, or events to influence your local politicians and community, we encourage you to do that too.
