SEND AN EMAIL: Don't Arrest Librarians in Alabama

This bill will have a chilling effect on free speech and incarcerate librarians for having books that explain sex or that show different experiences for all ages. We need YOU to stop it.

Vote NO on anti-library bill HB4. Don’t jail Alabama librarians!

Alabama lawmakers want to criminalize librarians for doing their job and will put them in jail in order to impose their ideology on everyone. TWO BILLS will strip public and school libraries from their obscenity exemption, strip librarians of their obscenity exemption status and empower the Attorney General and extremist groups to file lawsuits against them and libraries should they stock any book these groups deem “inappropriate.”

Extremists are trying to penalize them for having LGBTQ-affirming content, claiming sexually explicit material is available to children. That is false but unsurprising since Clean Up Alabama and Moms For Liberty have signaled that this was their master plan from the very beginning.

We need YOU to stop it. This bill will have a chilling effect on free speech and incarcerate librarians for having books that explain sex or that show different experiences for all ages.

AL GOP Party Chairman and Alabama Public Library Service Board member John Wahl stated that the goal is to jail librarians for having books they don’t like. Under his leadership, the AL GOP passed a resolution at their Winter 2024 meeting to propose this legislation, which they now have done during the last few weeks of session.

Let’s tell them they don’t get to jail our librarians for having books that they don’t like purchased with OUR tax dollars.
