Georgia school libraries are under attack by the state legislature.
Georgia HB1104 now includes an unfunded requirement to track what children read and use in school libraries. This is technologically impossible for many school districts in Georgia. Tracking each and every time a student uses library material would require collecting tremendous amounts of personal information. This would bring new degrees of student exposure to cyberattacks.
School libraries and schools’ resources are stretched as they are, with teachers and media specialists already asked to take on many responsibilities. The provisions in HB 1104 create even more challenges for schools.
Please contact your legislators today to express your concerns about this unfunded mandate to school libraries.
