UPDATED April 12, 2024:
Unfortunately, the powerful special interests who want to deconstruct and dismantle Louisiana Libraries have gotten a new bill introduced that would politicize libraries and create political library boards. We need your help opposing HB946 the same way that we stood up and opposed HB640 (below). Please take the important step today and send another email to your elected officials to say No to HB946.
We've made it as easy as possible by using this page. Thank you for protecting these Parish institutions that serve so many of our neighbors.
ORIGINAL Post:
This is a critical moment for Louisiana libraries. The state legislature is currently considering House Bill 640, which would end the autonomy of public libraries and place them directly under local politicians' control. If passed, the bill would allow Parish Councils, Police Juries, and Municipalities to remove library board members without any cause, jeopardizing the neutrality of our libraries' mission and operation.
Library boards have always been essential in protecting libraries against censorship and political interference. If HB640 passes, the appointment and removal of board members will be under the discretion of local politicians, making educational resources and reading subject to political agendas. We have to stop the politicization of our vital institutions.
Join the Louisiana Library Association and EveryLibrary to safeguard our libraries. Please use the form on this page to send an email to your state Representative and Senator today to oppose HB640.
Let's stand together to protect Louisiana libraries' independence, integrity, and invaluable service.
