When given the option, parents don't want to restrict their children's reading

Despite the breathless claims from a handful of extreme activists that parents want to restrict student library access, in Florida, the numbers tell a WILDLY different story.

As students go back to school, a host of new regulations in Florida will change the access they have to books in their classrooms and libraries. That means that parents have the ability to opt-out of reading material. Yet, for all of the hysteria of book banners, you'd think that more than 1% of parents would opt-out. That's just not the case and these reading regulations are costing taxpayers millions of dollars.

According to reporting by BookRiot (who obtained this information through FOIA request), several school districts in Florida have implemented new systems that allow parents to opt-out of allowing access to their children's reading material in schools.

Yet, as you can see in the data below from those districts, less than one percent of parents choose to restrict their children's reading material!

Flagler County School District

The district has 13,000 students yet only 19 kids have been restricted from library materials. That means that 99.85% of parents do not want their children's books restricted.

Osceola County Schools

With over 60,000 students only .46% of students have had their reading material restricted and only 4 students have been opted out completely from their school libraries because their parents do not believe they should be able to read or borrow from them. That means that 99.54% of parents do not want their children's books restricted.

Polk County Schools

In a district with 110,000 students, only .14% of the student body have been opted out and cannot read any book they choose in the library. That means that 99.86% of parents do not want their children's books restricted.

Despite how clear it is that less than 1% of parents are interested in restricting books, ultraconservative groups continue to fight to deny access to books for 100% of America's students through Government regulations.
