13 Books Banned By the State Government in Utah!

The law required the automatic purging of school library books if three districts banned them (or if two districts and five charters banned them).

Utah legislators passed HB29 in 2024, claiming that librarians, teachers, and school board members should suffer criminal “consequences” for having books like Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison’s book The Bluest Eye, Judy Blume’s Forever, and Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian on high school library shelves.

Now, the first wave of statewide book purges has begun with the banning of 13 books, and more to come!

We can't let this spread to your state.

That's why we made it easy to send an email against book bans to your legislators here!

Unlike some legislators who are out to make political hay and use national culture war issues to divide us, EveryLibrary understands that Judy Blume is not a pornographer and that pornography is not in school libraries.

That's why we're supporting the work of Let Utah Read, a local network of concerned citizens and community organizations. As a founding coalition partner, EveryLibrary is supporting Utah’s anti-censorship efforts in a number of meaningful ways. Our staff serve on the leadership team and manage much of the coalition's web, social media, and email communications. We have helped to organize, promote, fund, and staff numerous community and awareness-building events, including two highly successful read-ins at the Utah State Capitol.

A monthly donation of just $1, $3, or $5 ensures that we can continue to support communities across the country.

We urge you to tell your legislators to STOP BANNING BOOKS and work with librarians and teachers to end government regulations that would keep parents from choosing books for themselves and their families.
