Arresting Librarians Has NEVER Led to More Liberty and Freedom.
History has shown that prosecuting librarians or educators is one of the hallmarks of an oppressive regime.
A House bill in Alabama that could have led to the arrest of librarians narrowly missed becoming law last session.
But sponsors of the bill are going to try again in February!
In Texas, several bills have been pre-filed in an attempt to eliminate defenses against prosecution for library materials, including those that have scientific, political, artistic, or literary value.
We're currently tracking legislation in states across the country, and we expect to see similar legislation in other states.

House Bill 4 has been sponsored by Rep. Arnold Mooney, R-Indian Springs.
It also has 49 co-sponsors, including the House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter, R-Rainsville.
With nearly half the House signed on as co-sponsors and the bill filed more than six months in advance, it appears poised to pass through the lower body in the upcoming session.
While this bill is similar to its predecessor, it has been streamlined to better detail the procedure for charging librarians with a crime.

This isn't the first time that legislation like this has been attempted.
In 2024, at least 17 states worked to enact legislation to incarcerate librarians.
We know that we'll be facing the same onslaught of legislation this year. But this time, the recent election will empower them.
We can't let legislation like this go unanswered. Arresting librarians would limit the free exchange of ideas, restrict critical thinking, and harm our society's cultural and educational fabric.
Most importantly, history has shown that prosecuting librarians or educators is one of the hallmarks of an oppressive regime that seeks to control knowledge and suppress dissent.
A monthly donation of just $5 will allow us to fight legislation like this across the country, all year.
Bills like these echo dark periods in humanity when freedom of thought was under attack.
That's why we need your support today.
