POLL: Should The Government Arrest Librarians for the Content of the Books on the Shelves?
Over the last few weeks we’ve seen a dramatic escalation in threats to the jobs and safety of librarians due to outrage over books on the shelves of our public libraries.
Librarians are facing threats from local and state legislators that could result in civil damages or criminal prosecution for simply doing their jobs and providing information to their community. These anti-democratic outbursts are coming from politicians who want to be able to control what others have access to on the shelves of our libraries.
Rather than simply allowing parents to choose which books their children should read, they’ve taken their outrage out on hard-working library staff, and have even gone so far as to threaten librarians with arrest if someone objects to certain books being on the shelf. That means that thousands of your tax dollars would be spent on incarcerating librarians because someone didn't like a book on the shelf.
This hostile environment makes it difficult for librarians to serve their communities and creates a dystopian nightmare where government officials aggressively move to deny Americans their right to choose their own reading material.
We want to know whether you believe that parents should be able to freely choose books for their own children, or if you believe that those decisions should be made by politicians who seek to use the power of the state to lock up librarians for providing books.
