Despite pressure from political watchdogs and good government groups, Facebook has refused to take responsibility for ensuring American elections are not influenced on their platform by outside organizations, fake or misleading news, and other infiltrators.
This is a crisis point for our country. As a Political Action Committee that fights for information professionals like librarians and information organizations like libraries, we can’t stand by while our democracy is being threatened with fake news and nefarious political tactics that use false and misleading information to sway campaigns.

Facebook doesn’t see a problem with false or misleading ads. They don’t fact-check posts or limit how their powerful advertising algorithm can be used to target specific groups. We agree with Mark Zuckerberg when he says that “political speech is important”. But this hands-off approach gives unscrupulous politicians, wealthy special interest groups, and rogue actors a license to lie to influence our free elections.
Ironically, Facebook relies on third-party fact-checkers to help reduce the spread of disturbing images, memes, and manipulated photos and videos. But they exempt politicians from that fact-checking program. We don’t think that political leaders from any party or political pursusasion should get a pass at spreading as much false or misleading news as they try to keep themselves in power.
