The pro-MAGA groups are raising thousands of dollars and funneling support from all over the country into this fight.

That's why EveryLibrary is proud to directly support library advocates and book lovers who have joined forces behind a pair of charter amendments that would yank control of the local public library system away from a MAGA-aligned and funded city council that has been playing an increasingly active role in regulating books and attempting to privatize the library.

The radicalized city council has gone so far as to install a "MAGA" plaque in the library.

Library defenders in Hungtington Beach are taking their fight to the ballot as public libraries have become a conservative culture-war target across the country. In statehouses, on local ballots and even at the Library of Congress, MAGA aligned politicians are working to cut funding, remove controversial books and fire or even seek criminal charges for librarians who provide books to children without their approval.

The first proposal, Measure A, would repeal the city council’s parental review board and give public librarians back control of library content.

Measure B would prohibit the city from selling or leasing parts of the public library system to private companies, or otherwise privatizing library services.

Mirroring the issues championed by Trump and his allies on the national level, a newly elected conservative majority on Huntington Beach’s city council in 2023 declared it a “No Mask and No Vaccine Mandate” town, banned the Pride flag from city buildings and city property, and it pushed a voter ID measure that voters approved in March 2024, putting the city on a collision course with state officials over its enforcement.

Then, the conservative faction of Huntington Beach’s city council turned its attention to the public library system. Last year, months after establishing the parental review board, council members raised the possibility of privatizing the library to cut costs. But we were able to win that campaign.

That's why we know we can fight back and win again! But only with your support.

Amanda Jones to Headline Virtual Fundraiser for Our Library Matters

This Thursday, May 22, 2025, renowned librarian and author Amanda Jones will join a virtual Fireside Chat to support Our Library Matters, a political action committee advocating for the passage of Measures A and B in Huntington Beach. The online event aims to raise funds and awareness before the June 10 special election.

Jones, celebrated for her memoir That Librarian: The Fight Against Book Banning in America, has become a national voice against censorship in libraries. Her advocacy began in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, where she faced harassment after opposing book bans at a local library board meeting. Since then, she has co-founded the Livingston Parish Library Alliance and Louisiana Citizens Against Censorship, and serves as President of the Louisiana Association of School Librarians.

In Thursday’s discussion, Jones will share her experiences confronting censorship and the importance of preserving intellectual freedom in public libraries. The event underscores the stakes of Measures A and B, which address the governance and potential privatization of Huntington Beach’s library system.
