SEND AN EMAIL: Protect WiFi Hotspots for Students and Libraries – Vote NO on H.J. Res. 33
ACTION NEEDED: Protect WiFi Hotspot for Students and Libraries
Unfortunately, the Senate passed S.J. Res. 7, a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution that would overturn the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) decision to allow schools and libraries to use E-rate funds for Wi-Fi hotspot lending. The resolution now moves to the House of Representatives as H.J.Res. 33. We remain committed to stopping this resolution and protecting broadband access for schools and the students they serve.
Why Hotspots Matter:
- 9 to 15 million students lack home internet, widening the digital divide.
- Libraries and schools lend hotspots to ensure access to homework, online courses, and essential services.
- Nearly 20,000 schools and libraries are currently applying for hotspot funding. If this resolution passes, they will lose it.
The Impact:
- 40 percent of Title I teachers avoid assigning online homework due to inequitable access.
- 46 percent of libraries already lend hotspots, but demand keeps growing.
- Veterans, job seekers, and families rely on hotspots for vital online resources.
