PETITION: Stop Trump's Proposed Elimination of Federal Funding for Libraries

Page 56 of Trump’s proposed budget calls for the closure of the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The ONLY source of federal funding for libraries.

6,291 signatures
Goal: 25,000 signatures

The Institute of Museum and Library Services provides critical funding that supports literacy programs, workforce development, broadband access, digital skills training, early childhood learning, veterans services, and educational opportunities in cities and towns like yours.

Eliminating IMLS would harm students who rely on libraries for homework help and internet access. It would impact job seekers who depend on library technology and training. It would reduce services for seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities. It would weaken museums and cultural institutions that preserve our shared history and educate future generations.

Federal investment through IMLS is modest, yet its impact is enormous. Removing this funding would shift the burden to states and local communities already facing tight budgets, forcing cuts to essential services.

Your communities depend on libraries and museums. Your students depend on them. Your democracy depends on them.

Sign this petition to tell Congress: Do not eliminate IMLS. Protect funding for libraries and museums now.

Will you sign?

We, the undersigned, call on Congress to reject the proposed elimination of funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services, as referenced in the recently released federal budget proposal. This proposal would dismantle one of the most important sources of federal support for libraries and museums across the United States.

We urge Congress to:

  • Reject any proposal to eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services
  • Fully fund IMLS to ensure continued access to library and museum services
  • Protect federal support for literacy, education, and community learning nationwide
