SEND AN EMAIL: Protect Equity and Intellectual Freedom at FVRLibraries
Join us in emailing the Board to let them know that you want equity and intellectual freedom prioritized in FVRLibraries’ Strategic Plan, Mission, Vision, and Values.
FVRLibraries has gathered community input for its Strategic Plan since Spring 2025. At the first reading on November 17, several trustees opposed including “equity,” calling it politically charged, and the Chair said they could not support the plan if the word remained. Trustees also questioned “unrestricted access” in the definition of intellectual freedom, citing concerns about minors.
Intellectual freedom is a longstanding foundation of public libraries, formally affirmed in the 1939 Library Bill of Rights. Libraries provide broad access to ideas, while parents and caregivers guide their own children’s reading.
