Support the Rhode Island Freedom to Read Act (S0238 / H5726)
Update: Please send a message before April 22 asking your legislators to "prioritize the Freedom to Read Bill" this session. That date is the deadline for leadership to put the right to read on the fast-track agenda.
In recent years, reading and access to information in Rhode Island have faced significant challenges, with book challenges increasing by over 675% since 2020. The Rhode Island Freedom to Read Act (S.0238 / H.5726) has been introduced to protect the freedom to read for all residents, ensuring access to books and ideas without fear of censorship.
The Act reinforces fundamental rights like free speech and expression, as outlined in the First Amendment and the Rhode Island Constitution. It establishes clear policies for library collections, allowing Rhode Islanders to engage with a diverse range of ideas while protecting schools and libraries from frivolous lawsuits.

Designed to limit censorship, the legislation restricts challenges to those with a genuine connection to the community and provides legal protection for librarians and educators against harassment. This act acknowledges the essential role of educators in curating appropriate materials, enhancing intellectual freedom, and supporting creative expression in Rhode Island.
