SIGN THE PETITION: Protect the Freedom to Read in Texas

Senate Bill 88, filed for the 2025 Texas legislative session, poses a significant threat to the freedom to read.

This bill dramatically expands the scope of books that could expose booksellers, librarians, and educators to liability simply for selling, distributing, or displaying books that a minor might see.

This bill, sponsored by Senator Bob Hall, is part of a worrying trend. Hall also backed HB 900, the READER Act, which imposed burdensome restrictions on booksellers, schools, and libraries.

It is one of a slate of bills that have been introduced before the state legislature is even in session targeting the right to read. Other bills add “obscenity” liability for educators and doctors while removing liability for law enforcement.

Texas has more important things to worry about than culture wars and a manufactured crisis.

Stop attacking the right to read, and leave teachers, librarians, and booksellers alone!
