Ask Governor Ayotte to Veto SB 33 - Protect New Hampshire's Right to Read
Please join the New Hampshire Right to Read Coalition in asking Governor Ayotte to Veto SB 33 to protect free speech in New Hampshire's Schools, Libraries, and Bookstores.
The New Hampshire House has passed SB33, a bill that would censor free expression and the right to read in New Hampshire's Schools, Libraries, and Bookstores. Unfortunately, this is the second pro-censorship, anti-student, anti-reader bill the state legislature has passed this session. Governor Ayottee recently vetoed HB324, which is strikingly similar to SB33. She needs her to take out her red pen again and veto this bad bill as well. Join the Right to Read Coalition in asking her to take this critically important position now.
In her Veto Message about HB324, she said that the bill has serious problems:
- Constitutional Issues: SB33, like HB 324, raises serious First Amendment concerns by potentially restricting access to diverse educational materials.
-
Criminalization of Educators: Like HB324, SB33 would unjustly penalize teachers and librarians, undermining their professional judgment and dedication.
-
Erosion of Local Control: SB33, like HB324, diminishes the role of local school boards and parents in educational decisions.
But SB33 even goes one step beyond banning books to also censor web pages, videos, artwork, performances, and other school materials.
Polling earlier in the session by MomsRising and EveryLibrary showed that a majority of New Hampshire voters oppose these types of bills. Let's remind Governor Ayotte about these problems with SB33 and ask her to do the right thing again for New Hampshire families, education, and libraries by pledging to Veto SB33.
