They've ALREADY Tried to Arrest Librarians.

If you're thinking, Surely we wouldn't actually arrest librarians over books, remember this: Someone already tried.

They came for the books.

Then they came for the librarians.

That isn't a warning about what might happen someday.

We've already seen it happen in states across the country.

State laws that allow librarians and booksellers to be arrested almost always begin as simple book-ban laws.

Arkansas is simply the most recent example.

In fact, 17 states have pursued laws that would criminalize librarianship.

And in one case, a sheriff in Texas pursued the arrest of school librarians for more than two years. Luckily, there were no laws to support his efforts.

H.R. 7661 and S. 4925 are Federal Book Ban Bills, and we know they represent a dangerous escalation of the political campaign against books and libraries.

Donate today and help us keep fighting.

This is why you cannot look at these fights in isolation.

First, politicians decide certain books are unacceptable.

Then they create mechanisms for removing them.

Then librarians and educators face pressure for making those books available.

And in Texas, we saw where that pressure can lead: a two-year criminal investigation aimed at putting librarians on the wrong side of felony charges.

If you're thinking, Surely we wouldn't actually arrest librarians over books, remember this: Someone already tried.

We cannot wait until another librarian is sitting across from a police investigator to decide that this has gone too far. We need you in this fight now.

It's just as important that you share these campaigns everywhere you can.

Just click to share this on Facebook, Bluesky, Twitter, Threads, and LinkedIn!

Send them to your friends. Send them to your colleagues. Post them in your library groups.

Share them with parents, teachers, authors, readers, and everyone who believes that putting books on a library shelf should never make someone fear prosecution.

Because this fight is no longer simply about which books are on the shelves.

It is about whether fear of political retaliation and criminal investigation will determine what librarians are willing to put there in the first place.

We know what that looks like.

We've already seen it.

Help us stop it. Sign. Share. Contact Congress. And keep fighting for the freedom to read.
