Family Time: Getting into Regular Library Visits

How often does your family visit the library?

With abundant free entertainment and educational resources, your local library is one of the best places to spend quality time with your loved ones.

Libraries are a cornerstone of community infrastructure. They offer the public access to information, entertainment, and even critical resources—but don’t overlook their value as a family-centric meeting place! Libraries can bring generations together, enrich children’s lives, and offer new lines of communication between loved ones. Here’s why you should make your local library a regular family tradition.

New Horizons

First and foremost, the library is a vast source of information. Within the walls of even very small libraries, we’re exposed to an expanse of unique perspectives and stories from both long ago and far away. Both fiction and nonfiction can help us analyze the world in new ways, become more empathetic toward other people, and learn new things.

For kids, the experience can be invaluable. Not only do libraries offer a wealth of information about the world we live in—and sometimes worlds far from our own—but the habit of reading can be enriching in and of itself.

In fact, researchers have begun uncovering a potential link between reading for pleasure and later positive outcomes in cognition and mental health in adolescents. So, whether they’re reading sci-fi, ancient history, fantasy, or about the amphibians in the Amazon, as long as children learn to enjoy the process, their brains just might thank them for it later.

Forging Connections

Libraries are amazing places to spend time with your kids and forge new connections. Whether they’re voracious readers or not, the great thing about libraries is they often have a lot to do. There might be computers, music, images, and even events to attend.

Importantly, libraries are a community space where you can get out of the house and spend time together in an enriching environment. They are a great place to establish comforting routines where your kids feel encouraged to spend time thinking, reading, or talking.

With so much to explore together, the library can also be a source of surprising connections. You may find that you share interests you’d never discussed or that your kids never knew about—whether they might be in music, art, culture, science, or even what kinds of stories you like to read. The library is a rich meeting ground where these types of conversations are easily sparked.

Seriously, You Should Go!

Consider making library visits a part of your routine if they’re not already. It’s free to go, and you may be surprised by the sheer amount to do and learn when you visit! Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to read together, a way to make learning fun, or even just a place to check in with your loved ones, the local library is the place to go. It’s an enriching environment for both kids and adults, and regular visits can be an invaluable source of family bonding.
