Libraries offer so much more than books these days. People check out all kinds of items; whether they need something important or just want to try something fun, libraries have stepped up to meet those needs. The Library of Things trend—collections of a wide range of items you can borrow with your library card—is here to stay, and many people don’t realize just how many interesting options are available.
One area where libraries shine is technology. Affordability is a huge concern for American households right now, and when library lending services expand to include expensive items, it makes a huge difference in people’s lives. Here, we celebrate the vast array of technological “things” that are making a splash at libraries around the country, with the hope that you’ll see something that inspires a visit to your local library to see what new treasures they offer.

Makerspaces: A Place to Create and Explore
We can’t talk about this new technological wonderland in libraries without first discussing makerspaces, which are credited with kickstarting this trend. Makerspaces are dedicated spaces where libraries maintain a selection of high-tech machines for use by patrons. The tools vary, but they typically support artistic pursuits such as 3D printing, sewing, laser cutting, and engraving. As content creation gains popularity, some libraries even lend streamer and podcast kits.
Library staff are often on hand to introduce less experienced patrons to these machines and offer project ideas during open makerspace hours; more importantly, if staff aren’t available, other makerspace users might be. In this way, makerspaces serve as community hubs where people share ideas, meet other creators, and try new skills at any level.

The Library Toolbox
Some tech items meet essential needs that might otherwise be too expensive. Mobile hotspot programs—where patrons can access wireless internet connections for the extent of a loan period—are absolutely game-changing for those living in rural areas. Hotspots help patrons with everyday tasks such as online banking, telework, and job searches. While libraries have always been invaluable in filling these gaps in access, travel to the library can be time-consuming and costly for some, and hotspots help reduce that burden.
Other useful tools that may be borrowed from libraries include car code readers, blood pressure monitors, and even yard tools like shovels, rakes, and hoes! These items support everyday life and help people save money.

The Library Toy Chest
Not everything in a library needs to be practical to be valuable. Many people visit simply for enjoyment, whether that’s a new bestseller or an old movie on DVD. Libraries also lend fun and creative items that spark curiosity and play:

STEAM Kits. These education-themed kits help kids learn through play, each with a specific theme or learning objective, such as coding, phonics, or spatial reasoning.

Musical Instruments. Some libraries lend keyboards, electronic drum sets, and guitars to patrons looking to indulge their inner musician, practice their skills, or learn how to play an entirely new instrument.

Adventure or “Experience” Items. From museum passes to state park passes to themed backpacks that include gear to encourage activities like hiking, stargazing, and bird-watching, libraries encourage families to explore the world beyond the library doors.
Libraries across the country are working hard to give people more ways to learn, create, and explore. Many Library of Things programs are supported by grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). These grants help libraries offer tools, technology, and experiences that families might not otherwise afford.
IMLS funding has faced challenges in recent years, and these programs depend on strong federal support. When that support is at risk, the services that help communities every day are at risk too.
