Libraries as Entrepreneurial Launchpads

The overlooked role libraries play in nurturing local entrepreneurship

Are you looking for a career change? Do you have ideas for the business of your dreams? Being an entrepreneur can be exciting, but it can also come with challenges. If you’ve been struggling to get started, consider looking into your local public library. To celebrate National Entrepreneurship Week, we’re looking at all the ways libraries can support aspiring entrepreneurs.

What Is National Entrepreneurship Week?

In mid-February of each year, the United States recognizes entrepreneurs nationwide through National Entrepreneurship Week, a congressionally chartered event with origins dating back to 2006. After a five-year hiatus, the observance relaunched in 2017—branded as NatlEshipWeek—to reach new audiences and provide updated resources to aspiring founders.

According to its official website, “NatlEshipWeek’s relaunch is a testament to the American entrepreneurial spirit that resides in and connects communities and inspires innovation.” In conjunction with the initiative’s mission to empower entrepreneurs, public libraries offer unique opportunities for individuals to kickstart their businesses.

Library Resources That Support Entrepreneurs

Business and Research Materials

Libraries provide a plethora of free research materials for budding business owners, including digital resources such as e-books and databases that would otherwise be blocked by paywalls. Of course, entrepreneurs can still research the old-fashioned way by checking out books related to their business goals.

To support local entrepreneurs, the Providence Public Library in Rhode Island maintains a dedicated page with business-related databases, book recommendations, and listings of upcoming classes and events.

Classes and Education

Sometimes being a lifelong learner is the easiest way to begin your dream career, and libraries can help entrepreneurs expand their skills. Many offer free classes and workshops on various business topics. Some even bring in outside professionals to expand on the subject and provide specialized training, which can offer essential networking opportunities for entrepreneurs to collaborate and support one another.

Community Spaces

It can be challenging for new entrepreneurs to find free coworking spaces. Fortunately, most libraries offer community rooms for meetings, research, and day-to-day productivity. These shared spaces can give new entrepreneurs a reliable place to work, meet clients, and develop their ideas.

South Carolina’s Richland Library has a unique entrepreneur-in-residence program that allows aspiring professionals to share their talents with patrons and connect with fellow entrepreneurs.

The Newark Public Library in New Jersey features a creative program series that highlights the benefits of coworking spaces. Entrepreneurs are invited to attend Grind & Grow sessions on the second Wednesday of each month, where they can cowork alongside other local business owners. The series continues afterward with evening classes and workshops designed to help entrepreneurs build new skills.

Librarian Support

Librarians can be an entrepreneur’s greatest asset, particularly when they specialize in business support. Some libraries even have dedicated business librarians who assist patrons just starting their ventures, offering guidance on topics like payroll, business planning, and inventory management. They can also help entrepreneurs navigate the library’s research databases to find the information they need to move forward.

Makerspaces

Many public libraries offer makerspaces—designated areas equipped with tools for hands-on projects and creative work. These spaces often include resources like 3D printers, laser engravers, sewing machines, and other specialized equipment. Entrepreneurs can take advantage of makerspaces when their work involves prototyping or product development, allowing them to access costly tools without spending on potentially expensive items.

Internet and Computer Access

For some entrepreneurs, reliable internet and computer access can be reason enough to visit the library. Having a space to work online helps them handel essential business tasks without added costs. Library computers also provide access to research databases and other tools that support early-stage business work.

Celebrate National Entrepreneurship Week

National Entrepreneurship Week is all about equipping and empowering people who are building or growing a business. Public libraries support that work every day by offering resources, expertise, and community connections. If you’ve been looking to explore a business idea you’ve always dreamed of, your local library is the place to begin.
