Our passion for libraries and their impact on the lives of book lovers worldwide means that we want to take a moment to discuss the connection between empathy and reading. We selected this statement because reading does so much more than provide a temporary escape: it allows us to step into another person’s shoes.

Don’t just take our word for it! Researchers have discovered a correlation between increased empathy and people who read fictional novels. A 2006 study found that participants who read fiction scored higher on the Interpersonal Reactivity Index and the “Mind of the Eyes” assessment, two tests that measure different dimensions of empathy.

Even more fascinating is that researchers believe that the act of reading itself increases empathy. In other words, people don’t select certain reading materials because of their heightened empathy skills. On the contrary, people are more empathetic because of what they read.

Libraries provide free and accessible reading opportunities for all people. Decide to see another person’s perspective by visiting your local library and purchasing some fabulous Read More, Hate Less clothing items!
